We are all so proud that India is hosting Common Wealth Games 2010 at its capital, New Delhi. The preparations are in full swing. Every morning, we see atleast a page of the news paper carrying its news. We also remember the pressure mounted on the Chief Minister and Sports minister by the officials of CWG, late last year due to the progress of the work and its completion. Now, that the work is in such high speed, i am really impressed :)
Yes, i do feel proud that sports persons from different nations will all be seen in India. It is indeed a very good opportunity for the Indians as well. I hope to see many medals adoring Indians :)
But, i am little disturbed over the hype and the preparations that CWG is receiving. It has exceeded the budget allocated. Every morning i see the statistics, i feel the shiver. Sometimes i feel, is it really necessary for a developing country like India, where we have so many sectors yet to develop? Cant the same budget be allocated to Agriculture sector, where we have so many farmers committing suicide? Or cant it be allocated to control the increasing food prices? It can even be allocated to education sector where we still haven't reached complete literacy rates? Or even the medical field, where rural India still needs complete medical facility.. well well, the list may go way too long. But, i think we need to stop and give it a thought.
Of course, i do appreciate the infrastructure development going on as a part of CWG, like Metro and developments within Delhi. But there is something beyond Delhi, that needs development too.
I just want some one to explain me the necessity of CWG at such high costs at the cost of developments at home? Of course, sports is one other sector that needs help, but this can be done by helping the individuals with more facilities and support.
Also, the news that moved me some days back is about the exploitation of workers at the CWG site by the contractors in order to meet the goals. Can we help here?
I only feel its planning that has gone missing here.
Anyways, i hope we will have a fantastic Common Wealth Games at our home that we can cherish!!!
